In an interview in today’s paper edition of Corriere dello Sport, Sassuolo chief executive Giovanni Carnevali has revealed Barcelona had enquired about Stefano Sensi before the Neroverdi sold him to Inter but firstly he looked ahead to this weekend’s match with Inter and spoke on late Sassuolo president and owner Giorgio Squinzi.

“Every time he beat Inter, he put a plaque up in his office. He did it mainly because during the ascent of Sassuolo from Serie C to Serie A he always spoke of his desire to defeat Inter at San Siro,” he said.

“He achieved this goal. So many ideas and so many things he said were achieved. He argued that with commitment, motivation, generosity, sacrifice and above all humility everything is possible.”

He then went on to reveal that Barcelona had shown an interest in signing Stefano Sensi before Inter won the race for him.

“When I was in Barcelona for the Marlon negotiations, one of the Barcelona executives asked me about Sensi. They knew about him and kept tabs on him too, but Inter were quicker.

“We closed the deal on a Friday, after a brief meeting at the Nerazzurri’s offices, which was also attended by Conte. On the following Monday, I would’ve had an important appointment with a foreign club…”

He also touched upon what he was expecting from Inter and the recent injuries Inter players have suffered.

“I expect to face a strong team that will try to win to forget the defeat to Juventus. Inter have a squad capable of compensating for certain absences. I worry more about ours but I remain confident because we have important players.”

Carnevali also spoke on his relationship with Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta.

“Beppe is a true friend of mine. Our relationship began over 30 years ago, after I had finished playing. He wanted me with him at Monza and then at Ravenna and Como. He gave me the opportunity to start working in football and was my teacher. Over the years our relationship has become even closer and I was also his wedding witness.”

In conclusion he was asked who he thinks will win the Serie A title.

“Juve because they are the strongest both on the pitch and also behind the desk. Compared to the past, however, the gap with Inter has been reduced.”
