In an interview with Affari Italiani, officials from both Inter and AC Milan’s management explained what will happen if there is not a declaration of public interest in their project to build a new stadium that will replace San Siro.

“If the City Council does not recognise the public interest in the proposal of the clubs, the San Siro option will cease to exist from its first procedural step,” they said.

“If this situation occurs, and only then, will the clubs define subsequent steps, without prejudice to the need to have a stadium in line with the top clubs who they compete with: following the status quo and restructuring San Siro are not viable roads.

“The clubs have made a clear and precise proposal. If you want to say no – even just partially – the clubs will evaluate what to do. Maximum willingness from everyone to improve the project is required but not to distort the fundamentals of the proposal.”

They were also asked about the redevelopment of the area surrounding their new stadium but remained tight-lipped on the topic.

“The project presented to the Municipality of Milan envisages both the construction of the Stadium and a multi-functional district, as required by the stadium law, necessary to ensure economic sustainability and to achieve the goal of redeveloping the entire San Siro area.

“The definition of the mix of activities can only take place after the public interest and will take place in the procedural dialogue with the institutions.”
