Milan city mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has spoken on the future of San Siro and admitted that whilst he and the council would like to see it remain standing and used for football among other things, it has to be worked out if it is financially sustainable to do so.

“I totally support the idea of not demolishing the Meazza, although it is clear that details of whether it is economically sustainable are required and the role of the two teams here is important,” he explained in an interview with Gazzetta TV.

“I have nothing against the new stadium. I understand the need to have a new stadium and therefore more revenue. The ball is in the court of the two clubs. We will meet about the future of football in Milan.

“On Monday there will be a resolution of address by the City Council, then the game will return to the board and from there on they will work.

“The current San Siro, at least in our idea, would not only become a facility for football but also for other reasons but we need to see if it is financially sustainable.”
