AC Milan are interested in signing Ivan Rakitic from Spanish giants Barcelona in the January transfer window according to a report in today’s print edition of Milan based news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Rossoneri have joined city rivals Inter in showing an interest in the out-of-favour Croatian central midfielder and whilst AC Milan could afford to buy him, Rakitic’s bumper wages could well prove to be an issue for them.

The sale of goalkeeper and star prospect Gianluigi Donnarumma alone would enable AC Milan to sign Rakitic but for obvious reasons they do not wish to do that. Alternatively, they could fund Rakitic’s wages by offloading several of their own out-of-favour players.

31-year-old Rakitic, who is under contract with Barcelona until the end of the 2020/21 season, has been limited to just 203 minutes across eight appearances across all competitions for Barcelona, who no longer consider him as indispensable, unlike in the Summer.
