Milan city mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has shared his hopes to see San Siro remain in some capacity but admits he knows it must be worked out if it is feasible to keep it standing.
“The council board will decide why a formal step is needed with respect to the need to open an operational dialogue with the clubs. We expressed clearly what our requests are,” he said, as quoted by Calcio e Finanza, at the announcement of the Generali Milano Marathon.
“The council decision is very positive, but the fact remains that there are some aspects, some important stakes needing worked out with the reduction of noise and how much we can regenerate San Siro among them. It is not said we can but I hope and I ask the clubs to make a serious effort to try to find new life for San Siro.
“We must understand the feasibility, the best thing would be a mixed solution, with a commercial space, but even a small arena could be useful to the city. The problem is whether from a financial point of view it is feasible, we will discuss this.
“The situation seems clear to me: there is no closure from the point of view of the administration on the new stadium, but since we are not just talking about a new stadium but also of shopping centres, hotels and offices, we need to understand if these match with the public interest.”
He concluded: “Given that on our ground there is the will to create something else, we need to find a balance between the legitimate interests of those who invest and our interests.”
