Inter’s potential deal with Napoli striker Dries Mertens rests on the future of two of their current forwards, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how the Nerazzurri are keen to offer Mertens are a two-year contract with an option for a third, offering him a salary of €6 million plus bonuses per season.

However, this deal would be more complicated if they decide to enact their buy option on 30-year-old Chilean forward, Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez, currently on loan from Premier League side Manchester United, commands high wages and Inter may not take up the option if they prefer to sign Mertens.

Sanchez made four appearances for Inter before suffering a Peroneus tendon injury with Chile that won’t see him return to the pitch for Inter until January next year.

However, the report adds, if Spanish giants Barcelona decide to pay the €111 million release clause in 22-year-old Argentinian striker Lautaro Martinez’s contract, then Inter would be able to both sign Mertens and enact the buy-out option on Sanchez, thanks to the huge injection of capital.
