Inter and Napoli striker Dries Mertens are close to an agreement that could see the 32-year-old Belgian forward move up to Milan from Naples in the upcoming January transfer window, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Naples based newspaper Il Mattino.
The report details how, due to Mertens’ leadership of the training retreat protest earlier this week, the Naples based club may be happy to let him leave in January and at least earn some compensation for him, before losing him on a free transfer next June.
Furthermore, Mertens is pushing for a move to Inter in January, the report continues, with President Steven Zhang potentially open to satisfying the requests of coach Antonio Conte to strengthen the squad in the upcoming window in order to keep up the pressure on reigning league champions Juventus.
The report adds that the deal could cost Inter €25 million for the player, with a three-year contract set to be offered to him worth around €4.5 million per season.
