The Portuguese football federation have confirmed that midfielder Joao Mario has been forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

The Inter owned attacking midfielder, will return to his loan club Lokomotiv Moscow for treatment on the injury, which the note from the Portuguese football federation did not disclose details of.

As a result, the 26-year-old will miss out on the reigning European Champions final EURO 2020 qualifiers at home to Lithuania and away to minnows Luxembourg over the coming week.

The former Sporting CP player has performed well for Lokomotiv since his arrival this past Summer, scoring once and tallying four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions.

Prior to the move, Joao Mario had fallen massively out of favour at Inter, where he is still under contract until the end of the 2021/22 season. Should he continue to perform well in Russia, he could land there permanently with Lokomotiv having an option to sign him.
