Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has admitted that he is refusing to let himself get down having lost his regular starting spot in the Dutch national team lately.

The 27-year-old, who joined Inter from Lazio back in 2018, now finds himself almost always resigned to the bench when he reports for national team duty due to the emergence of Matthijs de Ligt, who partners Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk in Ronald Koeman’s team.

“I feel that I am a better defender than at the 2014 World Cup when I was a starter. I must remain positive, always do my best and wait for my chance to impress,” de Vrij, who has 37 caps for the Netherlands, remarked in an interview with Dutch broadcaster RTV Rijnmond.

He was also asked about the possibility of playing at right back, a position he played whilst at Feyenoord.

“I have not played at right back for a long time, I would play in whatever role the manager needed me too but I came here to be a central defender.”
