Stefan de Vrij has discussed his lack of playing time recently for the Dutch national team ahead of their final two EURO 2020 qualifiers.

The 27-year-old has 37 caps to his name but he has made no appearances in over a year which is largely down to the emergence of Matthijs de Ligt, who is now Virgil van Dijk’s partner at the heart of the defence.

“I always like to come to the national team, I think we are a nice group. Of course it would be even better if I played a little more, but I still think it is a great honour to be here,” he told Dutch broadcaster RTV Rijnmond.

“I continue to do what I always do, I stay positive and I try to play in the best possible way for my club. The coach has made a choice, it is his right to do so. The team is doing well and the results are good.
