Former Inter midfielder Evaristo Beccalossi, who won the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri in the 1979/80 season, touched on Inter’s start to the season and their future games in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

“I didn’t expect Inter to grow so fast. If I had been told that at the beginning of the year that Inter would be one point behind Juventus, I wouldn’t have believed it. Having followed Inter’s path over the years, I can only say that a great job has been done.

“Then it’s clear that once you get so close, you might start dreaming of wanting the best, but don’t forget that Juve are a team that have been built over the years and have won for a long time. Usually, at this point in the league they’d already have started to pull away and secure the title. Inter have to start from what they’ve built this year, trying to stay as close to Juve as possible to continue the fight. But the path taken by the club this summer is already important.”

The 63-year-old Italian touched on the Nerazzurri’s most important arrivals in the summer.

“Barella and Sensi were very good. Jumping from a smaller team to a big one is never easy, but they’re straightforward. However, I have to say that above all the growth has not been in individuals, but in the group. You can see that there are strong motivations and that there’s a good organisation.”

Beccalossi also spoke about former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, who has scored nine goals in his first 12 league games with Inter.

“Lukaku is 26-years-old and has incredible room for improvement. I really like him for his attitude and desire to do things, he never hides and always tries to help the team.

“Lautaro is also having an exceptional season thanks to the fact that he has a player like Lukaku at his side, who moves and fights with many defenders. Maybe the Belgian didn’t play all the games very well because he didn’t have a real pre-season and he wasn’t very fit at the beginning, but on a team level he has a huge importance, because he also frees Lautaro who has more space to be a hero.

“Of course, the best would always have everything to give even in the Champions League, but in football you can’t always succeed, and it doesn’t affect the absolute value of the player.”

The former Inter midfielder was impressed with the growth shown by Lautaro Martinez.

“He’s grown up a lot too. Last year he gave the impression that he was always under attack, this year he realised that he was an important player and with the type of game that Conte has he is growing quickly and will become decisive.”

Finally, Beccalossi discussed Inter’s young star forward, Sebastiano Esposito.

“He’s already an Inter player for all intents and purposes, but he has to keep his feet on the ground. He’s a player who has impressed me so much. Seeing him in training, he’s young, but very strong, if he needs to, he’ll be up to the task. Then, don’t forget his age. The future is all on his own.”
