Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina defended Italian referees and their usage of VAR when speaking to gathered reporters at a forum organised by Italian news outlet Italpress.

“I have always sided in defence of one of our excellences that is the refereeing role. Tomorrow we have a meeting with captains and coaches in which the press will also participate, the time has come to clarify some regulatory aspects.”

“There are clouds, dark sides on some rules that in my opinion have an objectivity, but that some use artfully and use exploits to create confusion. The work for the centralised room control in Coverciano have already begun, there will be a formation, our goal that we’ve already achieved is to distinguish careers.”

Italian referees, like many across Europe, have come under fire this season for their usage or lack thereof of VAR, with some calling for more increased usage in order to spot certain contentious moments, whilst others believing it is ruining the spirit of football, especially in regards to offside decisions that look too close to call accurately.
