Inter owned striker Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa was the hero for Flamengo yesterday as his two late goals gifted the Brazilian club the Copa Libertadores trophy.

The 23-year-old Brazilian striker scored two goals late in the game, in the 89th minute and the 92nd minute, to save the game for Flamengo, who were initially trailing 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 14th minute by River Plate forward Rafael Santos Borre.

The player received a yellow card after scoring his second goal for removing his shirt in the celebrations, which proved problematic when he taunted the River Plate fans with obscene gestures in the 95th minute, causing the referee to promptly send him off.

Flamengo’s win today has seen them achieve their second ever Copa Libertadores trophy, with the first one coming 38 years ago in 1981.

Gabigol’s two goals today have seen his goal tally reach 31 for the season, an incredible figure for a striker who looked lost during his spell in Europe with Inter and Benfica.
