VAR played a big factor in Inter’s 3-1 win over Slavia Prague last night and in today’s print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport have examined the situations that it affected.

VAR was firstly used when it looked like Romelu Lukaku had given Inter a 2-0 lead near the end of the first half of play at the Sinobo Stadium in the Czech capital.

Lukaku slotted home but the goal was quickly disallowed. Referee Szymon Marciniak was advised to consult VAR regarding a possible penalty in favour of the hosts prior to Lukaku’s goal. There were no doubts at all as Marciniak was quick to give Slavia a penalty after VAR showed that Stefan de Vrij had taken out Peter Olayinka.

The second time VAR was called into action was in the dying embers of the match. Once again its usage came after Romelu Lukaku had put the ball in the back of the net. VAR however showed that the Belgian, who arguably put in his best performance to date, was offside.
