Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has expressed his disappointment at Inter’s failure to progress in this season’s Champions League.

Inter’s Champions League campaign came to an end on Tuesday night as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to a very rotated Barcelona squad at San Siro.

Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri side went into the final group stage game knowing that a win or matching whatever result Borussia Dortmund achieved versus Slavia Prague would have seen them through but it was not to be. Inter finished third in the group and will play Europa League football in the new year.

“I am sorry that Inter were eliminated from the competition. It would have been fantastic for Italian football to have four teams in the last 16,” he told Italian news agency ANSA.

“Ahead of Monday’s draw for the next round, I want to personally congratulate both Napoli and Atalanta for getting through to the next round. We must all be satisfied with our performances.”
