Inter midfielder Borja Valero, who scored the opening goal in last night’s 1-1 draw in the Serie A away against Fiorentina, discussed the game in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia, immediately after the final whistle.

“I must always be ready when there is an opportunity. It’s a shame because we couldn’t take the three points home, which was the most important thing beyond my performance.”

He spoke about his decision not to celebrate following the goal.

“After five beautiful years in Florence it was the least I could do. But I’m glad I scored after so long.”

The Spaniard then touched on whether he would consider returning to Fiorentina in the future.

“My contract is about to expire, maybe this was my last game at the Franchi. We’ll see.”

Valero revealed how he kept his focus despite a lack of playing time earlier this season, as well as his relationship with coach Antonio Conte.

“He was clear from the beginning, but I was stubborn. I wanted to stay, for me it was an important opportunity on a personal level. I trained well and he also told me that before I started playing. I was calm, it was a shame to have found time due to my teammates’ injuries.  But when I was called on, I was ready.”

Finally, Valero spoke about his quick adaption to the role in Conte’s midfield trio.

“I played for three years at Fiorentina in this role, I still had in my mind how to do it. Today I had room to go deeper and look for dangerous areas, sometimes I was able to play well and sometimes I was less able to do so.”
