Inter and AC Milan intend to proceed with their new stadium project despite remaining in a deadlock with the Milan city council over the future of San Siro according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Nerazzurri and Rossoneri clubs presented their project for a new state-of-the-art stadium back in September and a public interest in the project was confirmed soon after.
As part of the project, the clubs wish to demolish current home San Siro to make way for commercial spaces, hotels, offices and other things but the city council have strongly opposed this and in a recent meeting asked the clubs to consider letting a renovated San Siro remain standing.
During yesterday’s meeting between the parties, the club’s presented their findings from their study into why having two sporting venues right next to one another is not viable.
The city council, who are desperate to not lose San Siro, are understood to have asked the clubs to consider allowing San Siro to remain standing on the basis that it is not used for professional sporting events.
Milanese newspaper Corriere della Sera are reporting similar and add that during the meeting the city council told Inter and AC Milan that if they do not think there is any room for two stadiums then there is no room for all the extras they wish to build to accompany the new ground.
