Inter legend Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has spoken out against those who have been critical of Romelu Lukaku this season.

“Many at San Siro are still in love with Mauro Icardi, and the fans are quick to grumble at Lukaku’s first mistake in a game but Romelu is fundamental for the growth of those close to him, such as Lautaro Martinez , who has become an incredible player,” he stressed in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia on television show Sky Calcio Club.

“Lukaku sets a positive example for others to follow and is important inside the dressing room. We must support him.”

Lukaku joined Inter in a club record €65 million transfer from Manchester United this past Summer. He has made 22 appearances across all competitions since. In 1843 minutes on the field, the Belgian international striker has scored no less than 14 goals and has also provided three assists for his teammates.
