Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign Napoli attacker Dries Mertens according to a report in today’s print edition of Spanish newspaper AS.

Mertens contract is due to expire with Napoli come the end of the season and this has led to several clubs sparking an interest in signing him.

Atletico have identified the 32-year-old as a possible option in the event that their deal to sign Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint Germain collapses.

They face competition from Inter, Everton, Manchester United and several Chinese Super League sides for Mertens signature.

Mertens could be allowed to leave Napoli in a cut-price deal in January so that Napoli can at least get something for him rather than losing him for nothing come the end of the season.

This season, the former PSV Eindhoven player has made 22 appearances across all competitions. In almost 1500 minutes on the park, he has scored nine goals and given four assists to teammates.
