In his latest column, which appeared in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, legendary Italian football manager Arrigo Sacchi has examined Inter’s 1-1 draw at home to Cagliari in Serie A action this past weekend.

The result meant Inter have now drawn four of their last six league matches but Sacchi, who is best known for his spell managing AC Milan in the late 1980s and early 1990s, insists that the Nerazzurri side have to be happy with what they have done this season overall.

“The Nerazzurri’s draw against a good Cagliari side has made them lose their heads. Antonio Conte is doing a great job but now the team is a little tired. Despite this, everyone must be satisfied with what they are doing. Inter will return to being a protagonist,” he began.

Sacchi, who also managed the likes of Parma, Italy and Atletico Madrid, then went on to praise Inter manager Antonio Conte.

“Antonio is a great professional and he will surely have noticed that his team is still sitting too deep and therefore it does not allow them to press or have quick counters.”

Next Sacchi went on to discuss how he feels the way the team set-up is in fact a limitation for the team.

“Playing with three central defenders is very defensive and not very constructive. If the attackers are too far away from the rest of the team, they can only be served with long balls which makes it easier for opposition defenders.

“Even if Lukaku managed to get a hold of the ball, then the rest of the team would not be there for him. Being compact and closer together helps both in possession and when pressing.”

He concluded his column in the Milan based newspaper by sharing his confidence that Conte will be able to find a solution to his side’s recent problems.

“Antonio Conte is a master and will know how to find the best solutions to be competitive until the end of the season.”
