Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini discussed Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni when speaking to Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today.

“He has great potential. I had him playing at 17, but at 20 it’s another thing. When he’s 22 or 23 the situation could change again. As soon as he made a few appearances everyone flew all over him, especially Inter, who were the first to come after the player.”

The 62-year-old Italian coach then spoke about the difficulty the Bergamo based club faces when trying to retain young talents.

“With these guys you see things out of the ordinary, the big Italian teams and others across Europe try to sign them immediately and it becomes difficult to keep them for a long time.”

Finally, Gasperini spoke about 25-year-old German midfielder Robin Gosens.

“After the goal against Inter he continued working with important ideals, I hope he continues to grow.”

Atalanta are currently 5th in the league after 21 games. In that time, they have won 11 matches, drawing five and losing five. The Bergamo based club are currently one point behind fourth place Roma and are set to fight for the final Champions League spot against the Giallorossi for the rest of the season.

Bastoni, who is contracted to the Milanese club until 2023, has made 13 appearances across all competitions for the Nerazzurri so far this season. In that time, he has scored one goal and impressed coach Antonio Conte enough that he regularly starts over veteran defender Diego Godin.
