Milan city mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has admitted to being optimistic that an agreement is closer to being reached between the council and Inter and AC Milan with regards to the new stadium project.
The Nerazzurri and Rossoneri clubs presented plans at the end of last year but the council were not convinced due to the fact the plans the clubs had included the complete demolition of their current San Siro stadium.
The council have long opposed the idea of losing San Siro and wish to keep it standing in some shape or form and there appears to have been some progress in recent weeks with it looking like it will be re-purposed to allow other sports to be practiced.
“I am becoming more optimistic, because I believe the two clubs are approaching our requests, which were very simple: save San Siro not so much as a vestige of the past, but to make it a living reality and not bring it down,” he said in an interview with Italian news agency ANSA on the issue.
Sala then shared his delight at the fact San Siro looks set to become what has been mentioned above.
“I like that the Meazza can become a city of sport, different from what it is today. Another question was that we could not be penalised economically as it was in the first proposal of the teams.
“It seems to me that the clubs are closer to meeting us. I was more pessimistic a few weeks ago, but I am veering on optimism now.”
