Former Inter manager Mircea Lucescu has praised Inter for their Derby della Madonnina win over city rivals AC Milan this past weekend and has shared his belief in this Inter side.

“Inter showed a lot of character in the derby. This is their year, they are incedible hungry and it is thanks to Conte, the club and the whole environment,” he explained in an interview with TuttoMercatoWeb.

“As I said, it is the year of Inter. It will not be easy because Juve will not let go, but the win in the derby, is a signal.”

He then shared some brief thoughts on Inter January transfer window recruit Christian Eriksen as well as Inter’s top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku.

“Eriksen is someone who has great experience and Lukaku has been good too. I like this team.”

Lucescu spent just under five months in charge of Inter during the 1998/99 season. He succeeded Luigi ‘Gigi’ Simoni, who was sacked in November, and was then sacked himself in March.

The Romanian managed the Nerazzurri in just 17 matches, of which he won four, drew four and lost nine. Since leaving Inter, the 74-year-old has also managed Rapid Bucharest, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St Petersburg and most recently the Turkish national team.

As part of the interview he was asked if he has any plans to get back involved with football.

“I will probably help Besiktas as a consultant/technical director, I will have to meet the president. We’ll see if we can agree on something.”
