In an interview with Italian news outlet Mediagol.it, former Italian national team defender Federico Balzaretti has discussed the highly exciting race for the Serie A title.

Inter are currently sitting at the top of the table after 23 games played with 54 points to their name. Juventus are second in the table with the same amount of points as the Nerazzurri but have an inferior goal difference and Lazio are in third place with 53 points.

“It is nice to know that our league has returned to being world class. As regards to the Scudetto fight, there are many factors to take into consideration,” he began the interview.

“Lazio are not in the Cups and Juventus are still looking for their identity. Inter are doing an extraordinary job thanks to Antonio Conte, who is the real top player of Inter. He has the Nerazzurri on the same points as Juventus, something hardly conceivable at the start of the season.

“Everything is still very open but as I say there are still many variables.”

Balzaretti then went on to praise Inter specifically for the work they did during the recent January transfer window as they recruited Ashley Young, Victor Moses and Ashley Young.

“Inter worked very well in January, the club bought ready players like Christian Eriksen who is an extraordinary player. With the market they have had, they have said, let’s try to win.”

Balzaretti has a 17 year playing career and represented seven clubs during that time including Rome, Juventus and Palermo.

He retired from football in the Summer of 2015 and took up the role of loan player manager at Roma but left this role this past Summer.
