Legendary Italian football manager Fabio Capello has spoken on the tightly contested race for the Serie A title this season.

For the first time in a number of years there is a true title race in Italy after years of Juventus just running away with things. Juventus are sitting top of the table at the moment with 57 points to their name, Lazio are sitting in second on 56 points and Inter are in third place with 54 points.

Capello started by discussing the race and what he has made of Juventus so far this season.

“The Italian league has become more interesting than in the past because there are three teams fighting for the title,” the former England national team manager, who last managed Inter’s Chinese sister club Jiangsu Suning, explained in an interview with Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“I am surprised at Juventus who have 10 points less than last year despite having the best team and the best players. In Turin it is normal to win and then restart the following season with the same goal.

“Evidently the players are not interpreting what the manager is asking of them, but the quality level of the squad is so high that the results have arrived anyway.”

He proceeded to speak on both Inter and Lazio, who are both well in the running for their first Serie A titles in nine and 20 years respectively.

“Inter are close by even if they have moments when they drop off a bit, as Conte has said. Lazio are meanwhile the real surprise of the season because it was not thought that they could do so well. Inzaghi has been good at creating a unity of purpose among the team which pushes the team to give everything.”

In conclusion he was asked who he thinks will win: “It is difficult to make a predicition. I think everything will be decided on the final day of the season.”.
