The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced moments ago that all sporting events in the regions of Veneto and Lombardy have been postponed due to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus in these regions, following two deaths and 79 confirmed cases of the virus, according to a report of the homepage of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.

The decision was announced by the Italian Prime Minister following an emergency meeting with his cabinet to assess the situation. After the meeting Giuseppe Conte announced that the Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora has decided that all public sporting events in these regions have been postponed.

The matches affected are Inter vs Sampdoria, Atalanta vs Sassuolo and Hellas Verona Cagliari, something that was confirmed by the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, on his Facebook page.

Moments later Inter released a statement on their official homepage confirming that the match had been postponed adding that a date for when it will be played is yet to be decided.

Entire areas of the two regions are in lockdown, with schools and offices having been shut, after cases of illnesses due to the virus had been confirmed.

Officially two people have died so far and 79 people have been infected, 47 of them based in the region of Lombardy, 17 in Veneto, 2 in Emilia-Romagna, 2 in Lazio and one person in Piedmont.

This action is seen as a step to prevent the spread of the virus.
