Former Inter striker Lothar Matthäus spoke about the rumours linking RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner to Liverpool, drawing a comparison to his move from Bayern Munich to Inter, in an interview yesterday. His words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.

“A commitment abroad gives you a boost, as I had in 1988. I played for Bayern, one of the best German teams, but then Inter gave me the push to test myself in another country, with another language.”

The 23-year-old Werner, who is contracted to RB Leipzig until 2023, has scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

He has helped the club be involved in the title race, sitting only one point behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

Matthäus spent four years with Inter between 1988 to 1992. In that time, he made 154 appearances for the Milanese club across all competitions, for a total of 13,652 minutes.

He scored 53 goals and provided eight assists in his four years in Italy. The player was one of the famous German players playing for Inter at the time, helping them to win a league title and the UEFA Cup.
