Inter legend Sandro Mazzola has said that if he were Napoli, he would do all he could to keep Dries Mertens at the club.

The 32-year-old attacker has recently become the club’s joint top all time goalscorer with Marek Hamsik on 121 goals but doubts remain over his future with the club with his contract with them set to expire at the end of this season.

Mertens has been with the Stadio San Paolo club since the Summer of 2013 and reports in the media have suggested Napoli have made a contract extension offer to him but the terms fall short of what the Belgian international forward is looking for.

“He is 33-years-old, that is true, but he is someone who knows how to reinvent himself and in that position he can still give a lot. I would call him, I would ask him what his real intentions are and I would do everything to keep him,”
Mazzola admitted in an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Il Mattino.

Due to his expiring contract status, several clubs, including Inter, are understood to be keeping an eye on him with a view to possibly making a move for him on a free transfer basis come the Summer transfer window.

“I do not think that Inter are not the only ones interested. The phone of Dries’ agent will always be ringing. There will be many clubs disturbing him right now.”
