Giovanni Malagò, the president of the Italian National Olympic Committee, discussed the postponed Serie A games in an interview on the TV show Pressing, hosted by Italian broadcaster Rete 4 today.

“It would seem that there is a possibility, it is not up to the Olympic Committee or the Government but to the League to see if they can use next week’s window when repositioning the league calendar.”

Malagò then spoke about how moving the Coppa Italia semi-finals seems to make the most sense to fix the calendar.

“I don’t know if this solution will be successful, because it is not up to us but they will have to evaluate it among themselves, at that point no one could say that a piece of this game day has been postponed because it would only be postponed for a few days. It’s clear that the Coppa Italia semi-finals would have to be repositioned and I don’t know if that will pass, but most of the criticism would certainly be overcome.”

Finally, Malagò touched on how important it is to have the regularity of the league.

“I can’t afford to speak absolutely on behalf of the government, but I think it would be happy with the certainty that it would confirm the regularity of the league. Clearly there must be a consensus on the part of the teams.”

Inter’s Derby d’Italia against Juventus was one of the five Serie A games postponed this weekend, due to the fears around the spread of the Coronavirus. Italy is the most affected country in Europe, with over 1000 confirmed cases. The clash against the Bianconeri has now been postponed to the 13th May, the original date of the Coppa Italia final.

Considering the postponement, the final will now be pushed back a week later, forcing the game to be played in Milan, as UEFA need the Stadio Olimpico on 20th May onwards for the European Championships.
