Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has shared his thoughts and feelings following this afternoon’s meeting between the Serie A clubs to try and work out a way to finish the season.
Nine Serie A matches have been postponed in the past two weeks and the two Coppa Italia semi finals which were due to take place tonight and tomorrow have also been postponed as a direct consequence of the Coronavirus’ presence in Italy.
Three of Inter’s past four scheduled games across all competitions have been postponed and with a lack of available dates, league organisers face a tricky task trying to sort the situation out, something Marotta admits is ever changing.
“The right harmony was restored in a time of great difficulty for the country, we need to be aware of the very serious health problems in our sphere, within football, he told the gathered media.
“The attempt is to complete the championship with the utmost regularity, without creating a competitive imbalance, but as you can see the situation changes day by day.”
He then went on to share his belief that playing behind closed doors is the only way for things to proceed.
“We are waiting for a new government decree, so we can travel on sight. Playing behind closed doors is the only way to finish the league in light of the situation and the restrictions that the government are rightly adopting.
“The council ratified the proposal of the 20 clubs to resume suspended games, this is the solution of the Lega. There is one slot difference between the end of the week, with the suspended games, then the Lega will communicate the dates.”
In conclusion he was asked about whether there is a date yet for Inter’s postponed match against arch rivals Juventus, which was due to take place this past weekend: “Juve-Inter? It can be played on Sunday or Monday.”
