Dries Mertens is on the verge of extending his contract with Napoli according to a report in today’s print edition of La Repubblica.
There have been doubts for some time over whether or not Mertens would prolong his stay at the Stadio San Paolo but as per this report, he will have put pen to paper on a new two year deal with the Azzurri by the end of this month at the latest.
His current contract is due to expire at the end of this season something which led to a whole host of clubs, including Inter, sparking an interest in potentially signing him on a free transfer in the Summer but all these clubs look set to miss out.
32-year-old Mertens, who has played his football for Napoli since the Summer of 2013, has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date this term. In almost 1800 minutes, he has scored 12 goals and tallied six assists.
