Italian government minister for sport and youth policies Vincenzo Spadafora has confirmed he is working on drafting the decree that will confirm all sporting events in Italy will be suspended until April 3.

Earlier on today the Italian Olympic Committee ordered that all games must be postponed with immediate effect in a bid to try and contain Coronavirus with confirmed cases verging on 10,000 in Italy at the moment.

As part of their release, they called upon the government to issue a special decree that will supersede the current one in place which allows sporting events to take place but only behind closed doors.

“I was pleased to hear the outcome of the meeting held today at the Foro Italico with the president of CONI, Giovanni Malagò, and the presidents of the teams,” Spadafora is quoted by Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb as saying on the latest developments in the ongoing Coronavirus situation the country is facing.

“I thank everyone for the seriousness, collaboration and awareness of the seriousness of the situation. I am already working on the drafting of the Prime Minister’s decree on sports, which I hope will be signed already tomorrow.”

With all sporting events set to be postponed, it remains to be see what will happen with the Champions League and Europa League fixtures that Italian clubs are set to play in in the coming weeks.
