In today’s print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport have praised Marco Guida for his handling off the penalty calls made during yesterday night’s Derby D’Italia between Juventus and Inter at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.
Minutes into the affair that was played behind closed doors, the ball was hit off of Inter wing back Ashley Young’s hand by Juventus winger Douglas Costa.
Guida was however correct to wave away calls as Young had his arms right in at his body and given the ball was hit in such close proximity to him, there was nothing he could have done to avoid the contact with his hand.
A few minutes later Inter had a potential penalty rightly waved away too after Leonardo Bonucci handled but like Young, he could not have avoided it. Guida made the correct decision on both occasions.
The Milan based newspaper have however been critical of Guida’s inconsistent handing out of cards but are in agreement with his decision to show a straight red card to Inter back-up goalkeeper Daniele Padelli for his comments after a decision.
Had the stadium been full, Padelli’s words may not have been heard and he may have not been given a red card.
