Genoa Sporting Director Marroccu: “Radu Asked To Leave But We’d Have Gladly Kept Him”

Genoa sporting director Francesco Marroccu has revealed it was Ionut Andrei Radu himself who was behind him leaving the club in January.

The young goalkeeper joined the Rossoblu club on a season long loan this past Summer and was a regular in the first half of the season but lost his place to Mattia Perin.

Radu then returned to Inter and was subsequently loaned out to fellow Serie A side Parma although he is yet to make an appearance for the Ducali club with Parma boss Roberto D’Aversa continuing to prefer Simone Colombi to him.

“As with all operations, we put Genoa’s first. Today many players who have decided to stay are paying the price of being in a competitive and big squad. Many important players are now playing little,” Marroccu explained in an interview with Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb earlier on today.

“We didn’t send Radu away. After the first time Nicola played Perin, he asked to leave. Radu could have chosen to remain available, we would have gladly kept him. It was his choice.”

Recent reports in the media have suggested that Radu will return to Inter at the end of the season and there is a chance that he could fulfil the role of deputy to current number one goalkeeper and club captain Samir Handanovic next season.
