Former SPAL manager Leonardo Semplici has shared his hopes that the 2019/20 Serie A season will not have to be decided by playoffs at both ends of the table.
As a result of the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic, Serie A is currently on hold until at least April 3 but there is great uncertainty as to whether or not the league will resume on this date and if all remaining fixtures will even be fulfilled.
It has been suggested in many reports that the league title for this season could be decided via playoffs and the same system would be used to determine European places and relegation places.
Other suggestions include simply not assigning the title at all and not relegating teams and going with a 22 team league for next season.
Semplici, who was sacked last month and replaced by Luigi Di Biagio in Ferrara, insists that playoffs are not a fair way of deciding things.
“Today, all the hypotheses are plausible, but I hope we will be able to continue the season, to resume the path without playoffs. Otherwise it would create situations that are not fair for all the teams,” he told Italian radio station Radio Sportiva earlier on today.
