Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal would have likely joined Inter in the January transfer window if previous coach Ernesto Valverde hadn’t had been dismissed, according to a report from Italian media outlet Calciomercato.com today.

The report details how the Spanish coach was the main reason that the Chilean midfielder was unhappy with the Blaugrana, who has since been revitalized under new coach Quique Setién. Inter coach Antonio Conte continued to try to sign the player despite Setién’s arrival, to no avail. The Milanese club signed Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen instead.

Next summer Inter will try to sign Vidal again, the report continues. Contact between the clubs is constantly ongoing, due to Barcelona’s repeat attempts to sign Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez. There is also no chance that the Chilean midfielder joins Juventus. The two parties were close to each other last December, when the player gave his availability to the Bianconeri, but the Turin based club decided against signing him.
