Inter were close to signing Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz two years ago, before the Spaniard exploded onto the scene with the Partenopei, according to a report from Italian media outlet Calciomercato.com today.

The report details how, in March 2018, Inter had direct contact with the Spaniard’s agent. The player had a release clause worth Real Betis worth €30 million. The Spanish club requested the full amount and postponed negotiations to the summer, which put off the Milanese club, as well as Inter’s commitments to Financial Fair Play.

That summer Napoli bought Ruiz, the report continues, where he quickly shone. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who is contracted to the Naples based club until 2023, has made 32 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2698 minutes. In that time, he’s scored three goals and provided two assists, being a core part of both previous coach Carlo Ancelotti and current coach Gennaro Gattuso’s squads.
