AC Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta discussed the current situation in Serie A and the European Cups, considering the postponement due to the Coronavirus emergency, in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.

“If there will be a restart in the near future we’ll go ahead with the calendar, but I don’t think it will happen. I like the idea of the playoffs, for four but also for six teams, with Juve and Lazio already in the second round and the other games being Inter v Napoli and Atalanta v Roma.”

The 53-year-old Italian then spoke about how it would be the right answer and a Final Four or Final Eight in the Champions League would also be exciting.

“The same results as in the two games would be rewarded in the table. I think it’s the right thing to do. The Champions League Final Four or Final Eight idea would also be great. We’re tied to a system like the Italian one, but this would be a novelty that would be more exciting.”

Finally, Costacurta discussed Inter under coach Antonio Conte and their growth under the former Juventus and Chelsea coach.

“I think Antonio Conte needs more time. This year he and the players have understood what needs to be done by giving great strength to Inter, as a team but also as a brand.”

Inter are currently third in the Serie A table, after playing 25 games. The Nerazzurri are eight points behind Lazio and nine points behind rivals and league leaders Juventus, although the Milanese club have played one game less than the two teams above them.

Serie A, like many other leagues around Europe, has been postponed due to the Coronavirus emergency, which has seen Italy go into a total lockdown.
