UEFA are planning to change the formula of their European competitions in order to complete them despite the Coronavirus emergency, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Spanish newspaper AS.
The report details how the plan is to use a Final Four format. The format will be that the four teams that reach the semifinals will compete for the trophy in two single legged semifinals and a final. The three matches would be played in one city, Istanbul in Turkey, which was already hosting this season’s Champions League final. In the Europa League the games would be played in Gdansk.
The idea will be voted on in Tuesday’s video conference meeting, the report continues, where 55 football federations from across Europe will be present. The organisation’s competition secretary, Giorgio Marchetti, is in charge of presenting the plan, which is considered the most feasible currently as the Coronavirus emergency doesn’t seem to be near its end.
