UEFA, the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe have come to an agreement on how football should deal with the challenges posed by the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic, UEFA have confirmed in an official statement.
Football across the continent has been put on hold in recent weeks due to the virus and UEFA held a meeting today to try and work out ways forward.
The biggest decision UEFA, in agreement with their 55 member associations, came to was the decision to postpone this Summer’s European championship’s until next Summer.
When it comes to national team competitions they have agreed to the following: European Championship qualifiers that were due to take place in March have been moved to June, subject to a review of the situation and the UEFA Nations League Finals, the final tournament of the UEFA U21 EURO and the UEFA Women’s EURO all scheduled between June and July 2021 will be re-scheduled accordingly.
As for club competitions: There is a commitment amongst all bodies to complete seasons by June 30 at the latest should the situation improve enough to allow games to resume in the first place. There is also an agreement that games in the Champions League and Europa League could be played on weekends and also an agreement that there could be changes to the qualification process of each competition.
UEFA have also confirmed that two working groups have been set-up to help deal with the current situation. One group’s focus will be working out dates for games to be played and the other group’s focus will be to assess the economic, financial and regulatory impact and to propose measures that could help mitigate the consequences.
