UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted that postponing this Summer’s European Championship’s was the only way possible for domestic leagues and cup competitions to be completed as soon as possible.

Earlier on today European football’s governing body took the decision to move the tournament from this Summer to next Summer opening up the month of June to leagues to finish their seasons which are currently on hold due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.

As of yet, there have been no announcements from leagues about how they intend to fulfil all outstanding fixtures but multiple reports in the media have suggested that leagues could adopt a schedule that would see their sides play every three days in order to get the season completed by the end of June in the best case scenario.

It is as yet unclear when domestic football will resume but many reports are suggesting that leagues are hopeful of being able to start up again come the beginning of May.

“We know that this terrible virus that has come across Europe has made football and life impossible. We have decided to stop competitions and think that postponing the European Championship’s is the only chance to end the national leagues and all club tournaments,” he said following the meetings as quoted by FCInterNews.it.

“We have to think about the health of the fans and the players and this is why we have made this decision thanks to the full support of the 55 European federations, European Club Associations and FifPro.”
