Dries Mertens is set to put pen to paper on a contract extension with Napoli according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Belgian national team attacker’s current contract with the club is due to expire at the end of this season and this has led to several clubs sparking an interest in signing him, including Inter.

Inter however look set to miss out on Mertens though with him set to sign a two year contract extension with the Stadio San Paolo outfit, who he has represented since the Summer of 2013 following a move from PSV Eindhoven.

The report from the Milan based newspaper goes on to state that as a result of this news, Inter may have a think about the possibility of signing Alexis Sanchez on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

Sanchez is currently on loan at the club from Manchester United and recent reports had stated Inter were ready to move for Mertens to replace him but the Nerazzurri may in fact end up trying to sign Sanchez permanently now.
