Cagliari sporting director Marcello Carli discussed the idea of an extended transfer window finishing at the end of December in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I think it’s still too early to give a definitive answer, I couldn’t go out of my way already. Let’s say it’s more of a ‘Why not? Let’s talk about it.’ I won’t hide the fact that there might be some organizational difficulties, it would be big news anyway, but the market remains fundamental for teams. So, it has to be done somehow.”

He highlighted what the priorities are at the moment as well as highlighting how the December closure on the extended window may be too long.

“Needless to say, the health of our people is all that matters today. A market of 4-5 months, with closure set for 31 December, would be excessive. However, it would be an interesting scenario.”

Finally, Carli touched on the suggestion that some players may be influenced by the open transfer window and could be less focused on their current club.

“Distraction, you mean for the players? It may be, we’re not used to negotiating for so long, but clubs need to be protected.”

Serie A, like most other leagues around Europe, has been postponed until further notice due to the Coronavirus emergency, which has seen Italy go into a total lockdown. The country has been hit the hardest in Europe, with thousands of deaths already. UEFA have agreed to postpone Euro 2020 until next summer in order to allow leagues to finish with regularity, although that depends on the current conditions of the emergency.
