In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Rai this morning, former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has shared his belied that it is not impossible for Inter to be able to sign Lionel Messi.
Moratti famously tried to sign a young Messi during his tenure in charge at the club but upon realising all that Barcelona were doing to help Messi from a health point of view, he decided to relinquish his interest.
Since then, Inter have drawn links to the multi-time world player of the year, particularly in recent months once it became apparent that he had a clause in his contract which allows him to free himself.
“I don’t think it’s a forbidden dream at all. Maybe it wasn’t even before this misfortune. Messi is at the end of his contract and it could certainly be attempted to bring him in.
“I don’t know if this situation will change anything, but I think we will see strange things at the end of the year.”
Moratti then went on to briefly discuss Inter striker Lautaro Martinez who has been strongly linked to Barcelona.
“He is a very good lad, he cares about his career but, as I have said before, we have to see if he will be part of a deal for someone like Messi.”
Moratti proceeded to talk about the current situation the world finds itself in due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.
“Explanations on what is happening should be given more by scientists and the administration. It’s a very unfortunate situation. The situation is very difficult but the Milanese and Lombardian people have behaved well.
“It is an experience that will stick with everyone for life and we hope it will be useful for the future.”
Moratti then went on to discuss the Coronavirus pandemic’s impact on football.
“I cannot understand if there is an obligation to finish the season and therefore sacrifice the next one. Gravina is absolutely right to look ahead at trouble that could arise from any type of decision.
“At a time when everything is changing, we cannot rely on old rules and we must have courage to do different things. Ceferin has insisted things should be finished normally but normality no longer exists.
“22 teams in Serie A? It would perhaps be the right thing, but it would be a very long season. I do not know how much we will be able to put the pieces back together.
“The decision must be made calmly and it is perhaps too early to make it. As Ranieri said, you must also understand the health of the players.
“We must be careful. It’s impossible to play with full stadiums. Great care must be taken in stadiums and we must not repeat the mistakes we have already made.
“Unfortunately, to finish this season you have to take a considerable risk, not finishing it means having to find the fairest solution.”
In conclusion, Moratti shared his belief that some of the wages of Serie A players should be used to help out lower down in the Italian football pyramid.
“The players were the first to realise the seriousness of the situation. The salaries which will be partly spared by their clubs should go to football lower down. I believe that many sacrifices should be made and the state should think about it.”
