Roma could join the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen if Chris Smalling does not remain with the club according to a report from Italian news outlet CalcioMercato.com.

Smalling is currently on loan at the Giallorossi club from Premier League side Manchester United and has had a very good season.

If the Englishman does not remain in the Italian capital, Rome could well look to pursue a move for Belgian national team centre back Vertonghen, whose contract with Spurs is due to expire at the end of this season.

Should Roma join the race to sign him, they will become the third Serie A club to be in for the 32-year-old former Ajax man who both Inter and Napoli also both have an interest in signing.

This season Vertonghen has made 26 appearances across all competitions to date. In 2151 minutes on the field, he has scored two goals and has provided a single assist.
