Napoli continue to want to sign Dries Mertens to a contract extension according to a report in today’s print edition of Il Mattino.
A few weeks ago, Mertens looked absolutely set to agree to a new deal with the Stadio San Paolo club but the Coronavirus outbreak threw everything up in the air.
Mertens met with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis on March 1 and during this meeting there were concrete foundations laid for a new deal to be reached but there has been nothing since then.
Due to the fact his contract is due to expire in a matter of weeks, several clubs have sparked an interest in signing him including Inter, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
The report warns that until he signs a contract extension with Napoli, if he does, the race to sign him remains very much open.
This season the 32-year-old has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date in which he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.
