Giovanni Malago, the president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), has shared his belief that it is now time to make decisions regarding the football season.
Football at all levels in Italy has been on hold for around a month due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic and as things stand it remains unclear whether or not the season will resume.
Some Serie A clubs have as many as 13 league games left to play as well as matches in other competitions which makes it far from easy to fit everything in whilst causing as little disruption to next season as possible.
In an interview with broadcaster DAZN today, Malago stated that a decision must be made and admitted that everyone will just have to lose out in some way, although, by his own admission, it is not the ideal solution to what is a very complex and unprecedented situation.
“I believe the big mistake that can be made is to intervene in contexts and worlds where there are precise delegations and representations,” he began.
“Do you want to be the President of a federation? Then this is your time to make decisions.
“Everyone must lose something, the ideal situation would be to find a path together, where there are no losers or winners and to help football start again as soon as possible and regardless of this season.”
He then went on to share his delight at the fact that the European Championship’s scheduled for this Summer were postponed to next Summer.
“It was absolutely the right decision to postpone the competition. Imagine what the European Championship’s would have been like without fans. In my opinion, it will be a great Euros, it will be the reason why international football can start again all together.”
