Dries Mertens appears to be far away from agreeing a contract extension with Napoli according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

The 32-year-old Belgian national team attacker’s current deal with the Stadio San Paolo is due to expire at the end of this season and although talks over a new deal have taken place, it seems unlikely that he will sign a new deal at the moment.

Several clubs have shown an interest in landing him on a free transfer should he let his contract run down with the Partenopei with Inter being long term admirers of him.

The report from the Rome based newspaper does however go on to warn that Inter are far from alone in courting the former PSV Eindhoven man, who has been with Napoli since the Summer of 2013.

Inter face competition from French outfit AS Monaco as well as Premier League duo Chelsea and Newcastle United.
