Roma have entered the race to sign Napoli attacker Dries Mertens on a free transfer according to a report in today’s print edition of Il Tempo.

Mertens, whose contract expires at the end of the season, appeared set to sign a contract extension with the Stadio San Paolo club in recent weeks but it is does not appear to be so certain now and Roma have sparked an interest in the hope of taking full advantage of the uncertainty.

Roma are prepared to offer the 32-year-old attacker a three year deal to swap Naples for the Italian capital and the report states that they are also well aware that they will not be Mertens first option given the type of money other interested clubs like Inter, Chelsea and AS Monaco could offer him.

This season Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date in which he has scored 12 goals and tallied six assists.
