In an interview with Italian newspaper Il Giorno, Inter legend Sandro Mazzola has shared his belief that Romelu Lukaku is better than Mauro Icardi.

“Romelu Lukaku is better than Mauro Icardi, if he had someone like me beside him he would score 50 goals a season,” Mazzola remarked in the interview which appeared in today’s print edition.

Mazzola, who spent the entirety of his playing career on Inter’s books, then reflected on Inter manager Antonio Conte’s first season in charge of the club so far: “Unfortunately Antonio Conte, who is very good, has lost the direct clashes with Lazio and Juventus but he can help Inter win all of the 13 games that remain.”

In conclusion he spoke on who he thinks will be the favourites to lift the Serie A title should the 2019/20 season resume: “Juventus remain the favourites but we’ll see what will happen.”

Mazzola played no less than 574 times across all competitions for Inter between 1960 and 1977, during which time he scored 161 goals whilst playing primarily as a second striker.

The now 77-year-old, who scored 22 goals in 70 appearances for the Italian national team, also served as a director at Inter upon his retirement up until 1984 and then returned to the club later on to be the sporting director between 1995 and 1999.
